1. User Name and Password

  • The HCOS Librarian is Mrs. Shandra Wiebe

  5. Save your barcode, username and password so you can access them when you need them.
  • Anyone in your family who will be placing holds for library materials, contacting the Library, or viewing current loans and due dates, should know this username and password. Everybody in your family is all part of the same Library patron account.
  • Children do not need the username and password to search or view the Library catalogue. They can still look through the materials, but will not be able to request them to borrow. Without a password, users also cannot see the list of current loans or due dates.

3. Searching, Placing Holds, and Reserving Items

  • Click on the Catalog tab; now you can search by Keyword, Title, Author, Subject or Series.  Be sure you have the correct spelling as the search function is not flexible.
  • You can also go to Resource Lists on the left hand side and browse the lists of books in Public Lists. Here you will find lists for CAPP, Science Kits, Socials Kits and much more.
  • Once you have found your resource, click on the title.  You will then go to the title details page.  On the right hand side there is a HOLD IT icon with a red book.  Click on it. Click Save to hold it immediately.
    OR
  • You can put the book/kit on hold right now or reserve it for a later date. There is a drop down menu that says “as soon as possible”, click on it and choose “reserve for a specific date”; you will go to another screen where you can choose the dates you want.  Make sure you click SAVE or it won’t be put on hold!  You can place up to 40 holds and you can have 15 items loaned out at one time.

To find Resource kits:

  • When you click on Search, choose “Copy Categories” in the middle of your screen.  This will take you to a list and half way down you will see “kits”.  All kits will be found here.
  • If you place holds for too many items at once, you might reach the maximum and no more holds can be placed until some are removed from the list.
  • You cannot remove your own holds. If the family accidentally placed materials on hold which you do not want the library to send out, please contact the Library immediately and library staff will “clear” the hold.
  • Once items have been checked out to the family, the “Hold” is cleared from your list and shows as on loan to you. However, when the family has 15 items signed out, new holds will not be mailed until some of those materials are returned.

4. Using Library Materials

  • HCS/HCOS materials are shared by many children and families. We ask everyone to use the books and other materials with respect and care.
  • Parents, please teach your children that library materials do not belong to the family and will be sent back. Washing hands before using books, and other appropriate care should be encouraged.
  • The entire family is included in your Online School Library patron account. The library staff cannot verify which family member has requested which items. Parents should not assume that all library materials are appropriate for all ages, as our school does contain materials for parental and instructional use, as well as highschool grades and provincial curriculum.
  • Please take note of the colours described on the Policies page which help the family to select reading level and content appropriate items.

5. Returning Items to the Library

  • Your family will be responsible for all materials sent to you by the Library. A list of your holds, loans, and due dates is available through the Catalogue in the “My Info” tab at the top.
  • If material is received by you in damaged condition, contact the Library immediately.
  • An item is considered returned when it arrives in the Library and is checked back into our system.
  • You are responsible for returning items that can be sent by lettermail.  Kits and large orders of books should be returned by Canpar courier. There is no cost to you for this service unless Canpar does not service your area. Please call or e-mail the library to arrange for a pick up: library@onlineschool.ca  250-862-2377 extension x311
    • Items must be packaged in bubble or tyvek envelopes; NO paper envelopes as they rip too easily. Boxes are also a good choice.  Please use the address label sent with your items. Items damaged due to poor packaging will be assessed a fine and billed to your account.

  • Our address is:

HCS/HCOS Library
907 Badke Road
Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada
V1X 5Z5

  • You can return library items in person and browse the shelves. The Library is not in the same building as the Online School offices, but in the main campus School building. Please check the library catalog website for hours.
  •  Please keep in mind that there are classes in the library between 1 pm and 3 pm.

6. View, Renew, and More

  • You can log back in to the Library Catalogue at any time. The “My Info” tab will show you what materials are signed out to your family, when they are due back and other information about your account.
  • Online School library patrons have the ability to renew their materials online. You may renew one item at a time, or the entire list.
  • You cannot renew an item if there are any overdues or if someone has placed a hold on it.
  • You can add new holds to your list anytime, as long as you have fewer than 40 holds in the list already.
  • If you have any questions about your family's library account, please contact the Librarian at library@onlineschool.ca
