At HCOS, the aim of Health and Career Education is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be informed decision makers and to make healthy and safe choices in obedience to God’s Word.
Christian Stewardship K – Students are expected to:
- begin to understand that everything they own and enjoy has been given to them by God begin to give cheerfully of their money, time, talents, and possessions
Goals and Decisions K - Students are expected to:
- identify opportunities to make choices
Career Development K - Students are expected to:
- identify their skills and interests (e.g. things they are good at, things they like to do)
- name a variety of jobs and responsibilities they have at home
- identify characteristics of a job well done
Healthy Living K - Students are expected to:
- describe how to care for the human body, including healthy eating and regular physical activity
- practice habits that prevent the spread of illness
- identify changes in their physical development from birth until now
Healthy Relationships K - Students are expected to:
- identify thoughtful, caring behaviours in families (e.g. nurture, guidance, love)
- demonstrate appropriate ways to express feelings
Safety and Injury Prevention K - Students are expected to:
- identify ways to avoid potentially dangerous situations in the home, on the road, and in the community
- know the difference between safe and unsafe substances
- demonstrate an ability to access emergency services

Health and Career 1
At HCOS, the aim of Health and Career Education is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be informed decision makers and to make healthy and safe choices in obedience to God’s Word.
CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP 1 – Students are expected to:
- begin to understand that everything they own and enjoy has been given to them by God
- begin to give cheerfully of their money, time, talents, and possessions
GOALS AND DECISIONS 1 - Students are expected to:
- identify opportunities to make choices
- identify reasons for setting goals (e.g. helps to identify steps, helps to focus on achievement, helps to identify personal accomplishments
CAREER DEVELOPMENT 1 - Students are expected to:
- identify their skills and interests (e.g. things they are good at, things they like to do, things they’ve learned)
- name a variety of jobs and responsibilities they have at home
- identify characteristics of a job well done
HEALTHY LIVING 1 - Students are expected to:
- describe how to care for the human body, including healthy eating and regular physical activity
- practice habits that prevent the spread of illness
- identify changes in their physical development from birth until now
HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS 1 - Students are expected to:
- describe some of the benefits of living in a family (e.g. love, helping, sharing, caring for people’s needs, security)
- demonstrate an understanding of appropriate and inappropriate ways to express feelings (e.g., appropriate – using “I feel” statements; inappropriate – name-calling, hitting)
SAFETY AND INJURY PREVENTION 1 - Students are expected to:
- describe guidelines for safety in the home, on the road, and in the community
- recognize unsafe substances
- demonstrate an ability to access emergency services, including calling 911 and giving relevant information

Christian Stewardship 2 – Students are expected to:
- begin to understand that everything they own and enjoy has been given to them by God
- begin to give cheerfully of their money, time, talents, and possessions
Goals and Decisions 2 - Students are expected to:
- identify the steps needed to achieve a goal (e.g., identify a goal, identify actions needed to reach the goal, identify what successful goal achievement would look like)
- identify opportunities to make decisions (e.g., healthy eating choices, games or activities)
Career Development 2 - Students are expected to:
- identify effective work habits (e.g. staying on task, being prepared, co-operating with others)
- identify how effective work habits can assist them in achieving success now and in the future (e.g. “if I complete my work on time, then…”)
Healthy Living 2 - Students are expected to:
- describe practices that contribute to physical and emotional health (e.g., regular physical activity, healthy eating, healthy relationships)
- practice habits that prevent the spread of illness
- indicate changes in their physical development from birth until now
Healthy Relationships 2 - Students are expected to:
- describe appropriate strategies for communicating effectively with others (e.g., active listening, willingness to express feelings)
- identify positive ways to initiate and maintain healthy friendships
Safety and Injury Prevention 2 - Students are expected to:
- recognize hazardous and high risk situations in the home, on the road, and in the community
- describe appropriate ways to avoid or respond to emergency situations in the home, on the road, and in the community
- describe the potential harm associated with various unsafe substances (e.g., illness, burns, poisoning)

At HCOS, the aim of Health and Career Education is to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be informed decision makers and to make healthy and safe choices in obedience to God’s Word.
Christian Stewardship 3 – Students are expected to:
- begin to understand that everything they own and enjoy has been given to them by God
- begin to give cheerfully of their money, time, talents, and possessions
Goals and Decisions 3 - Students are expected to:
- apply a goal-setting model to a short-term goal
- identify sources of support for children in a variety of situations (e.g., parents, neighbours, relatives, bus drivers, block parents)
Career Development 3 - Students are expected to:
- identify effective work habits (e.g. staying on task, being prepared, co-operating with others)
- demonstrate an understanding of the benefits of developing effective work habits (e.g., developing good habits now will carry through to high school and adulthood)
Healthy Living 3 - Students are expected to:
- describe practices that contribute to physical and emotional health (e.g., regular physical activity, healthy eating, talking to a trusted friend or adult when feeling sad or confused)
- describe practices that help to prevent the spread of illness (e.g., not touching infectious garbage, resting when sick, washing hands after sneezing or blowing nose)
- indicate changes in their physical development from birth until now
Healthy Relationships 3 - Students are expected to:
- describe skills for building and maintaining positive relationships
- identify the characteristics of bullying behaviour
Safety and Injury Prevention 3 - Students are expected to:
- recognize hazardous and high risk situations in the home, on the road, and in the community
- describe appropriate ways to avoid or respond to emergency situations in the home, on the road, and in the community

- apply the steps in a decision-making model to a specific decision
Career Development 4 - Students are expected to:
- describe their personal attributes, including skills, interests, and accomplishments
- assess their own work habits
Healthy Living 4 - Students are expected to:
- identify the characteristics of health living, including physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health
- explain the difference between communicable and non-communicable diseases
- begin to identify several of the physical changes that occur during adolescence - according to the needs and readiness of student
Healthy Relationships 4 - Students are expected to:
- identify the characteristics of positive relationships
- describe helpful ways to respond to bullying behaviour
Safety and Injury Prevention 4 - Students are expected to:
- describe the potential risks for injury in a variety of settings, including on the road

- demonstrate an understanding of the principles of Christian stewardship
- use their resources for God’s purposes at home, in the church, and in the community
Goals and Decisions 5 - Students are expected to:
- understand God’s role in human decision-making
- describe some of the factors that affect decision-making
- identify their personal support networks
Career Development 5 - Students are expected to:
- identify types of work and activities that interest them
- describe how work habits learned in home schooling can be used in situations outside of the home
Healthy Living 5 - Students are expected to:
- identify factors that influence attitudes and decisions regarding healthy lifestyles
- describe ways to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle
- describe practices that help to prevent communicable diseases
- identify some of the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur during adolescence – according to the needs and readiness of student
Healthy Relationships 5 - Students are expected to:
- assess their own interpersonal skills as they apply to building and maintaining positive relationships with family and friends
Safety and Injury Prevention 5 - Students are expected to:
- identify strategies to protect themselves from potentially unsafe situations, including practising safe Internet use
- identify factors that contribute to the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs

- use their resources for God’s purposes at home, in the church, and in the community
Goals and Decisions 6 - Students are expected to:
- understand God’s role in human decision-making
- identify influences on goal setting and decision making, including family, peer, and media influences
- use time management techniques to help them achieve their goals
Career Development 6 - Students are expected to:
- relate personal attributes and abilities to various types of work and skills
- describe any skills they are developing in their recreational activities that will assist them in other areas of their life
Healthy Living 6 - Students are expected to:
- describe the benefits of attaining and maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle
- describe practices that help to prevent communicable diseases (e.g. cleanliness)
- describe the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur during adolescence – according to the needs and readiness of student
Healthy Relationships 6 - Students are expected to:
- assess the influence that peers have on individuals’ attitudes and behaviour
- demonstrate an understanding of the harmful effects of stereotyping and discrimination, and bullying

- demonstrate commitment to the principles of Christian stewardship
- begin to develop a lifestyle of giving of time, talents, money, and possessions in obedience to the will of God
Goals and Decisions 7 - Students are expected to:
- understand God’s role in human decision-making
- design a plan to achieve a specific goal
- demonstrate an ability to apply a decision-making model to a specific situation
Career Development 7 - Students are expected to:
- classify jobs according to career clusters (e.g., by type of industry, type of work, personal interests)
- identify skills that are transferable to a range of school and recreational situations (e.g., time management, teamwork, problem solving, communication, adaptability)
Healthy Living 7 - Students are expected to:
- analyse factors that influence personal health decisions
- describe the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur during adolescence – according to the needs and readiness of student
- demonstrate an ability to access community information and support services for a variety of health issues
Healthy Relationships 7 - Students are expected to:

- academic skills
- teamwork skills
Healthy Living 8 - Students are expected to:
- set personal goals for attaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle
- analyse influences on lifestyle habits, including family, peers, and media
- understand the Christian perspective on healthy relationships
- describe God’s plan and purpose for dating and marriage (e.g. God-centered vs self-centered relationships)
